UMAR

UMAR - Union of Alternative and Response Women is a feminist, non-profit women's association with a national scope, operating in Mainland Portugal and the Islands, with branches in Braga, Coimbra, Porto, Lisbon, Setúbal, Viseu, and the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The association’s mission is to promote and defend women's rights in both laws and daily life, combating all forms of violence and discrimination, including sexism, classism, racism, homophobia, ageism, and other oppressions that put women in socially disadvantaged situations.

Thus, UMAR has focused its work on promoting gender equality and equal opportunities between women and men, as well as equality among women, fighting for their integration into social and economic development policies. In Porto, UMAR manages the Domestic and Gender-Based Violence Support and Monitoring Center, providing specialized support to women, children, and young people across the entire region.

Main projects:
  • EIR - Emancipation, Equality, and Recovery
This center aims to provide a safe space for women victims of sexual violence, where they can share their experiences freely, without prejudice. The support offered includes psychological, legal, and social assistance, helping victims in their recovery and reintegration.
  • PRATI - Support and Monitoring Center for Women Victims of Domestic Violence
This project supports women who are victims of domestic violence, offering psychological, legal, and social support to help rebuild their personal and professional lives. It also includes PRATI Children and Young People (psychological support for children and young people who are victims of violence) and the LAAR Spaces (apartments for women and their children to regain their freedom and autonomy).
  • ART’THEMIS+ Project
This gender-based violence prevention program in schools uses artistic tools and project-based methodology, empowering students. With positive feedback, it was launched in Porto in 2003 and is currently being implemented in various schools in Braga, Porto, Coimbra, and the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
