Traveling with children

Infants and children on board

We care about our most demanding passengers! Here is some important information, advice and tips to make traveling with the very young easier.

Offering the best for our youngest passengers

Find out how to prepare the children's trip, what can be taken on board and how we can help you. Follow our recommendations and instructions, and enjoy a nice trip with your baby or child.

How to book a ticket

Before booking a ticket, be aware that each adult can travel with a maximum of one baby under 2 years of age.

To book the ticket, you must:

  1. Access the page for bookings and choose the origin and destination of the flight.
  2. In the “passengers” field, add the number of children or babies to your booking. The total booking price will include the adult ticket and the child or baby ticket.

If you already made a booking and want to add a child or baby to it, you must do so using TAP's Contact Center.
Be warned that travelling is not recommended for newborns in their first seven days of life. In emergency situations, contact us so that the situation can be evaluated by our medical services.

Seats on board

Illustration with white and light-blue background, displaying two elements. At the center, highlighted, a white plane seat with dark-green contour, flanked, to the right, by the window of an airplane overlooking a cloudy sky.
Seat allocation is done automatically and free of charge at check-in, in the standard zone for adults and children with the same booking, regardless of the fare chosen. Whenever possible and whenever there is availability, seats for adults will be allocated in the same row of seats as the child, or in an adjacent row.
  • Children up to 2 years old: may travel on an adult's lap, or occupy a seat provided that they have an approved car seat (see conditions here) placed on the aircraft's seat. To do this you have to buy a child ticket.
  • Between 2 and 12 years old: the child must occupy a seat.
Our recommendation is that you book in advance, when booking your flight, seats for the whole family. On long-haul flights, it is particularly important that the whole family sits together and that your children can sit in their favorite seats to be more comfortable. Additionally, on long-haul flights, we advise you choose a night trip so that your children can sleep or rest along the way.

Check the baggage allowance

The hold and carry-on baggage allowed for children from 2 to 11 years old is identical to the baggage allowed for an adult. The amount of baggage may vary depending on the Class you are traveling in and the flight destination.

Hand baggage

Children from 2 to 11 years of age may travel in Economy Class with one personal item and one piece of hand baggage, or in Business Class with one personal item and two pieces of cabin baggage, on flights to/from Europe, Africa, South America or domestic flights.  If you are traveling with children between the ages of 2 and 5, you may also carry a child safety seat free of charge as long as it is used on board.

Babies under 2 years of age do not have a hand baggage allowance; however, if you are traveling with a baby in this age group, you may carry items that are essential for use during the flight as hand baggage, depending on the duration of the flight.

Hold baggage

Children from 2 to 11 can travel with a hold bag.

Babies under 2 can transport a 10Kg1 hold bag (as long as the sum of the 3 dimensions does not exceed 115cm / 45in) and also a fully foldable baby stroller, child seat or basket.

1Applicable only to Basic, Classic, Plus, Executive or Top Executive fares. If you travel on the Discount fare, you can only carry a fully foldable baby stroller, basket or child seat.

Baby strollers

Your baby can remain in the stroller until you reach the airplane door. When you enter, TAP will take care of the stroller and return it to you at the destination.
If you wish to carry the stroller in the cabin, you may do so in lieu of a carry-on baggage that your fare entitles you to, as long as it does not exceed the maximum dimens and weight currently permitted. If you are traveling with a baby, that piece will be deducted from the adult's carry-on baggage allowance. If you are traveling with a child, it will be deducted from the child's carry-on baggage allowance, always depending on the fare and status.

If you prefer to carry the (fully foldable) stroller in the hold, you can do so free of charge if you travel with a child up to 5 years old.

Do you need more baggage?

Add more hold baggage to your booking before or after online check-in.
Save time with online check-in

Do your online check-in and that of your family during the 36 hours before boarding, via our website or app and save time at the airport by avoiding check-in queues. Later, you can print your boarding passes or carry them on your cell phone and at the airport you will only have to check in your hold baggage, if applicable.

In the upper right corner, an information sign, in shades of green, with iconography related to the departures from the airport.
Boarding first

If you are traveling with children up to 5 years old, you can board first so that you have more time to settle the whole family and pack your things. You can take the baby stroller to the boarding gate, making it easier to transport your personal items and keeping your baby comfortable.

If necessary, the reduced mobility assistance service will be available to help.
Be creative during waiting time

Waiting time can be tiresome for babies and children. To help time run faster, we suggest taking your children for a walk through the airport. There are little things that can fascinate them: take them to the windows to watch the airplanes land and take off or the baggage being unloaded; take a walk on the moving walkways or, if you prefer to run and play, visit the children's areas that some airports have available.

Meals and entertainment

On board TAP flights, there will be special meals for children and entertainment so they can have fun during the trip.
To make the children's trip more enjoyable, we recommend that they take:
  • Something that makes them feel comfortable, like a blanket or a stuffed toy.
  • Toys to keep them entertained during the trip.

Meals

TAP offers special meals for babies and children, however, the request must be made at the time of booking. See all meal options.

You can take with you all the food you need, in quantities appropriate for the trip duration, except water, which can be requested on board and heated by the flight crew. When passing through security at the airport, you may be asked to taste the food (soup, yogurt, jar of fruit) being transported.

Entertainment and experience

To keep the little ones entertained, we have animated films, series and a music channel dedicated to children on board our airplanes. There will be so much entertainment that they won't even notice the time fly by. Find out more about inflight entertainment.

But the fun doesn't end here! On intercontinental flights there are offers for children and baby kits. At the end of any trip, the little ones are also entitled to a flight baptism certificate.

Requesting baby items

You can request cots or chairs for your little ones to use on board TAP airplanes.

TAP carrycot

You can ask us to provide a cot if you are travelling with a baby. This service is free only on TAP-operated flights. The following rules apply for the use of cots:

  • They are only available in Business Class on A330 CEO flights and in Economy Class on A330 NEO, A330 CEO and A321 LR flights;
  • The baby must not weigh more than 11kg/24lbs and the baby must be no more than 12 months old;
  • The cot dimensions are 75cm / 29 in long by 34 cm / 13 in wide and 22.4 cm / 8.8 in high;
  • The baby must always fit comfortably inside the cot;
  • The cot can never be used during take-off/landing and during periods of turbulence;
  • There are designated seats on the aircraft for cots and their number is limited. Therefore, please inform us when booking of all the flights on which the infant needs a cot;
  • The number of seats available for cots varies from one type of aircraft to another and if there is availability. This information is immediate and it will be confirmed when you book;
  • Each adult may take only one baby.

Car seat

You can also request the transport of your car seat, in which case you will need to book a seat and pay the fare applicable to a child over 2 years old. The following conditions of acceptance apply:

  • The seat must be used by children up to 5 years old;
  • The transport of the seat must be requested up to 24 hours before the flight departure, presenting a pre-notification of the seat request to TAP or your Travel Agency;
  • The seat must be approved by the competent authorities of any country for use in air transport and in motor vehicles, and have a sticker to prove it (ECE R44/04, FAA, FMVSS 213 USA CMVSS 213/213 1 Canada, TÜV: TÜV/958-01/2001);
  • The base of the car seat must not exceed the dimensions40 x 40 cm / 15.7 x 15.7 in and the seat and base must not be separated. The seat must have seat belts;
  • Generally speaking, the child occupies a window seat, next to the accompanying adult, but there may be exceptions on some planes;
  • The accompanying adult is responsible for transporting and placing the seat;
  • If the car seat does not fit safely into the airplane seat, it will be transported in the aircraft's hold;
  • With the exception of the approved car seats mentioned above, the use of any other type of child seat or suitcase that can be converted into a bed is not permitted on board TAP aircraft.
