To comply with the security requirements of the US authorities, all passengers boarding at Portuguese airports with a destination in any US city will be subject to a “security interview” carried out jointly with the PSP.
The documents required to travel to the United States may vary depending on your nationality and the purpose and duration of your trip. Therefore, in addition to owning a valid passport, you also need a Visa or an ESTA.
ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is an electronic travel authorization system implemented by the United States government. It applies to foreign nationals from countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) who wish to enter the country by air or sea for 90-day periods or less. The authorization must be submitted online and, at most, up to three days before the trip by filling out the identification form and paying a fee. It is strictly forbidden to enter the country without authorization.
Once approved, the ESTA is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, but always check the corresponding validity. During this period, you are allowed multiple entries into the United States.
Regarding the Visa, this applies if your stay is longer than 90 days or if the purpose of your trip does not fall within the Visa Waiver Program categories.
