Using an Electronic Passport at airports
All passengers of legal age holding a valid Electronic Passport—also known as Biometric Passport—can use the eGates and APC (Automated Passport Control) systems at airports for faster, safer and more efficient border control. This process involves scanning the passport chip and verifying the holder's identity by comparing the photo stored on the chip with the picture captured at the electronic gate.
All European Union (EU) citizens crossing the Schengen Area at major airports in Portugal can use this method via the RAPID System—Automatic Recognition of Passengers With Document Identification.
